Picking the right answer was excruciating and confused me so much I didn’t feel fairly tested on my true knowledge level. However, some people are great at eliminating red herrings offered in multiple-choice questions and sail through without breaking a sweat. Here is how they do it. Multiple-choice questions have three parts: STRATEGY 1. The stem grounds the question. This can be presented as a fill-in-the-blank sentence, rather than a question. Example: It is projected that by 2015, a dozen cities in the world will have populations between — and — million residents.

When you have completed a chapter, go ahead and answer the questions. Take the chapter tests “closed book” when you are confident about your skills. Try not to look back at the text material when you are answering questions. The free-response questions are no more difficult than the multiple-choice questions, but serve as a more in-depth review with a timed period to complete your answers. Along with the diagnostic exam in Chapter 3, there is a practice exam at the end of the book with questions like those in the individual chapters.
