These connective words, marking various kinds of relations such as cause-effect, problemsolution, topic-comment, similarity, and contrast, suggest the mental relations that writers made between ideas and also the relations between parts of their discourse.

The hypertext concept was further developed by Englebart (1963) and also by Theodor Nelson (1967), who coined the term hypertext. In Literary Machines Nelson (1981) later articulated many of the assumptions of hypertext. Here he was arguing for the authenticity of the electronic environment - its foundation in scholarly practice. Practical knowledge is learnt in practical situations and is often informal and implicit (or tacit) in nature. Third, self-regulatory knowledge, involving metacognitive and reflective skills, is also an important aspect of expertise. The development of expertise is a long process during which the different elements of expert knowledge are integrated into a coherent whole, and high-level expertise demands the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge.
